Server and RAID failures are a relatively common event and we typically recover anywhere from 1-3 failed RAID arrays per week. It is very rare for us to encounter a server, VM or RAID device that isn’t fully recoverable however when it comes to RAID data recovery there are some steps you can take to improve your chance of a successful outcome.
- Do not panic and resist the urge to initialize the array or any drives within it.
- Avoid attempting any logical recoveries, running chkdsk or mdadm repairs on the drives or forcing any failed disks or arrays back online. The physical recovery of any failed drive(s) needs to come prior to a logical recovery or you risk overwriting critical data.
- Every failed recovery attempt of a corrupt RAID array or server disk can lessen the chance of being able to get a complete recovery and may cause data to be overwritten.
